Charleston Regional Business Journal’s Movers
& Shakers highlights The People Shaking Up Charleston
Business, and Mitchell Crosby of JMC Charleston certainly
does that!
“His Southern charm speaks to the fact his family
has been in the Low country since the 17th century.
Crosby infuses that classic Charleston flair into his
personal life and his business, JMC Charleston, a 4-year-old
destination management, event planning and catering
business,” states Holly Fisher of Charleston Regional
Business Journal’s staff.
Even though he has a degree in political science from
Winthrop University, he ruled out law school and opted
to work at the Country Club of Charleston, and then
went to Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte as Club
Manager. When Crosby’s father passed away suddenly,
the 24-year-old left his Southern roots and moved to
Cape Cod. He packed his sterling mint julep cups and
his clothes and moved Provincetown, Mass. managing a
13-room inn. The town would close between 3 and 6 p.m.
so Crosby would entertain himself and the ladies in
the art galleries by making them “proper”
mint juleps. “I would make them toast the Confederacy,”
Crosby said.
Once Crosby returned to his Charleston roots, he worked
for Special Events of Charleston and later joined the
Woodlands Resort & Inn, helping open the world-class
Relais & Chateaux facility in Summerville. He then
took a position with Charleston Place Events, the event-planning
arm of Charleston Place Hotel. After eight years with
Charleston Place Events, Crosby decided to strike out
on his own. He spent a month organizing his business
papers and personal files and opened JMC Charleston.
About 75% of JMC Charleston’s business is corporate
events. Crosby devotes about 20% of his business to
high-end social events, and a few exclusive weddings.
His events are about the ‘people and the details’.
His philosophy is ‘the gathering of the people
is the best part of the event.’ He instinctively
knows how to turn a good party into a great one with
his attention to detail and a gracious style—he
has that Charleston touch. “Charleston is polite,
gracious and grateful,” Crosby noted, “you
don’t have that everywhere”. Using his eye
for design, he creates venues specifically for each
client or group. “It’s very fulfilling to
me,” he said.
Charleston Regional Business Journal focuses on business
